The 2005 Château Mouton Rothschild is an exceptional wine produced in the Pauillac appellation, in the heart of the Médoc region. This vintage comes from an atypical climatic year, with slightly cooler temperatures and a marked drought between April and September, favoring optimal grape concentration. The harvest took place between September 21 and October 6 under ideal conditions. The wine is made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, offering remarkable tannic structure and excellent aging potential.
The label design was entrusted to artist Giuseppe Penone, adding an artistic dimension to this grand cru.
The 2005 Château Mouton Rothschild presents a deep, dark, almost black color, reflecting its youth. On the nose, it displays impressive aromatic complexity, blending notes of ripe black fruits, cedar, tobacco, exotic spices, chocolate, and cedar. On the palate, it offers a firm and elegant tannic structure, supported by lively acidity and marked minerality. The finish is long and persistent, with a sensation of freshness and purity.
The grand vin of Château Mouton-Rothschild comes from the finest vines planted on the “Plateau de Mouton,” part of the estate’s 90 hectares. Their root systems are well-suited to anchoring themselves in particularly deep gravelly soils. As is the case with Pauillac, Cabernet Sauvignon largely dominates the blend. It can account for up to 80% depending on the vintage, complemented by Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
The harvest is carried out by hand.
The wine is aged for approximately twenty months in the purest Médoc tradition, entirely in new barrels, with topping up and fining with egg white to stabilize the wine by precipitating the remaining solid particles to the bottom of the barrel.
Most vintages offer opulence, richness, and depth, enhanced by a remarkable aromatic complexity ranging from blackcurrant to roasted coffee, mint, and fine leather.
Château Mouton-Rothschild’s unique feature is that it collaborates with an artist each year to design a unique wine label. You can find labels created by Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Dali, Francis Bacon, and even Prince Charles of England!
