Overview
The 2021 Château Haut-Brion is one of the greatest expressions of the Pessac-Léognan terroir, produced by one of the most iconic Bordeaux estates. Made from a blend of approximately 50% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 12% Cabernet Franc, this cuvée embodies the subtle balance between power and finesse. The 2021 vintage, although marked by a demanding climate, reveals a wine of exceptional elegance, ripe without excess, and with a controlled structure. The vineyard, planted on gravelly soils resting on faluns, gives the wine a rare minerality and refinement: a grand cru that combines tradition and modernity.
Tasting
The color is a deep and intense purple. The nose unfolds elegant aromas of ripe blackcurrant, wild blackberry, cedar, blond tobacco, graphite, and black licorice, accompanied by a very characteristic smoky touch. On the palate, the attack is precise and velvety, the tannins are fine but present, the structure is dense without being heavy, and the acidity brings a nice tension. The finish is long, airy, and saline, demonstrating great aging potential. This is an exceptional wine: it can begin to be enjoyed from 2030-2032, with the potential to age until 2050 or even beyond.
Imagine a terrace of ancient gravel, swept by the breezes of the Gironde, on which rise two legendary hilltops: this is the kingdom of Château Haut-Brion, the only Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 entirely outside the Médoc, and also a Cru Classé de Graves—a unique double distinction in the Bordeaux region.
From the very beginning, this terroir has been cherished: since the Gallo-Roman era, men have pressed the “graves”—those small quartz pebbles so poor yet so fertile—and discovered that beneath this bed of stones lies a soil of sand, clay, limestone, and faluns, capable of giving life to wines that are at once deep, refined, and timeless.
The vineyard covers approximately 51 hectares, divided between 48 hectares of red vines (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot) and a few hectares of white (Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris)—each plot harvested with the greatest care, the old vines imparting their wisdom to the youth of the grapes.
Backed by this thousand-year history, the estate lives under the aegis of the Clarence Dillon family, whose passion captures and perpetuates the prestige, elegance, and nobility of the wine. Here, everything contributes to the exceptional: the unique soils, the refined microclimate, the natural drainage, the demanding aging process, and the unwavering respect for oenological heritage.
Haut-Brion is not just a wine—it’s a legend embodied in every glass.
