Château d’Yquem is one of the world’s most prestigious sweet white wines, originating from the Sauternes appellation. It is renowned for its great complexity and exceptional aging potential. The wine exhibits intense aromas of candied fruit, honey, and spices, with a smooth texture and a long, elegant finish.
Château d’Yquem, a famous wine estate, could have remained English since it belonged to the King of England in the Middle Ages, then Duke of Aquitaine. In 1453, it became French thanks to the annexation of Aquitaine to the French crown by Charles VII. In 1593, Jacques Sauvage obtained tenure of the estate, and his family began building the château and establishing the vineyard. In 1711, the ennobled family became the sole owner of Yquem.
In 1785, Françoise Joséphine de Sauvage d’Yquem married the Count of Lur-Saluces, who died three years later. Widowed, she brilliantly managed the estate, even during the Revolution, when she was imprisoned twice. She modernized the property, had a winery built in 1826, developed the grape harvest by successive selections, and brought Yquem international renown.
